Step 17: Google Places

All right, now we’re at Google My Business. If you navigate to you can sign up for a Google Places account. Now, why do you need a Google Places account? Well, let’s check this out.

Here’s how it works. You ever notice that whenever you do a search for a business, you get a list of different places within your Google search that show you different businesses that are within your area? Well, these are the people that have created a Google Places account, and we want to show up in that list for sure.

When you update your Google listing, it says right here you take charge of what people see when they do a local search for your business. When you create an account here, everything is localized within Google. What that means is, is that if somebody is in say Los Angeles, and you’re a Los Angeles air duct cleaner, there’s a greater chance that you’re going to show up in that list under Google Places. I’ll even show you an example.

Let’s check out air duct cleaning Los Angeles. Okay, here we go. See this big mag right here? This section, even before we get into what they call the organic listings, we want to appear in this section. This is what we’re signing up for. You can even click right here it says, “More places.” See right here, this is a list of all the people that have signed up for a Google Place account. And it shows different kinds of information, shows a number, shows location. Shows a website. Look at that, right there. Shows a website link. So that’s why it’s very, very important. At least for you to get something out there on the web.

You even get a certain amount of stars for each listing, and mainly because people are reviewing the business. See right here, how it’s got no reviews? Well, the more stars that you have, and the more reviews that you get, the higher up on the list you get up to. That’s why it’s very important to get good reviews from your customers. That’s why it’s important to get to creating a Google Places account. So people can find you.

What I do is I just copy all of this, I know that this is just pure gibberish, but I’m using this as just like I said, as a placeholder, and then I go ahead and paste that into my text editor. I go ahead and update the page, and I go to the page itself and I click refresh, see how it all shows up? Now what about images, what if I want to add images to this page? Alright, good question. I’ll come back here and if I want to add media, go ahead and click this, and you can go ahead and select files from your hard drive, but I’m going to cancel out of that for right now. There already is some media on this, I believe. Let me see here, I’ll go ahead and click this right here, and let’s click update, let’s see how this looks. Click refresh, okay that doesn’t look the greatest in the world. Okay, let’s try to format this a little bit differently.

Let’s click this image, and you see all these little icons that show up right here? This is the alignment of the image. Right now it’s set to no alignment, instead I’m going to set it to aligned left so that the text flows around this image. Click update and refresh the page. There we go, it’s starting to take shape here. Alright, so that’s pretty much how you add just basic content and images to your WordPress page.
